Synopsis

This study is investigating whether periodic testing of the blood for CA125, which is a chemical that is elevated in women who have advanced ovarian cancer, can help detect the cancer early. The study is enrolling 2400 women who:

  • are known to have inherited the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations, or
  • have a first- or second-degree relative who has the mutation(s), or
  • have a genetic predisposition to breast or ovarian cancer because of their family history of these cancers.

Women who participate in the study will be tested for CA125 every three months for one or two years. An ultrasound exam of the ovaries also may be recommended. An ultrasound exam is a painless procedure in which sound waves are bounced off tissues and the echoes are converted into pictures.
